Elizebeth Smith Friedman was an American cryptanalyst and author who deciphered enemy codes in both World Wars and helped to solve international smuggling cases during Prohibition. Over the course of her career, she worked for the United States Treasury, Coast Guard, Navy and Army.

The ensuing explosion and fire led to the rig sinking two days later, causing an uncapped well to leak approximately 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf over 87 days.
